Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin will be meeting the Sultan this afternoon to brief him on the situation following the decision of the Election Commission to reject the state Speaker’s request for by-election in Behrang and Changkat Jering.
Speculation has been rife that Nizar will call for state-wide polls immediately after seeing the Ruler.
Pakatan Rakyat leaders, however, said this was not necessarily so.
“This is a very delicate situation, we need to consult His Majesty for his advice,” said KeADILan information chief Tian Chua.
“We have been trying to soft-land the entire episode, rather than just arbitrarily call for snap election. It has not been easy. There were so many issues to explain to the rakyat - from the viewpoint of morality over defections, money politics, the latest disgraceful behaviour of the EC and the non-stop cross-talk from Umno-Barisan Nasional people.
“But now, we may have to and it would serve Umno-BN right if we did. Umno will be at the height of their own internal election, and they will be plunged into chaos. Maybe they may even have to postpone their meeting. But this is not of our doing, it is well and truly their own fault if that happens.
“Whatever, it is, we will seek the wisdom of the Sultan and then come back to the people with the least disruptive solution.”
