PERJUMPAAN INTELEKTUAL : SURVIVAL POLITIK MELAYU DI SARAWAK

Gelombang kebangkitan rakyat Sarawak terutama masyarakat Dayak menjadi bahan bualan hangat.

PKR Sarawak Ramal Pilihanraya Negeri Diadakan Tahun Depan

SARAWAK STATE REP JOIN PKR SARAWAK

About 11,753 people in Sarawak, including 6,000 supporters of Ngemah state rep Gabriel Adit, have applied to join PKR.Their application forms were submitted to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim at a huge dinner gathering in Sibu tonight which saw more than 4,000 people in attendance.

Also signing up with the opposition party is controversial former PRS Balleh division publicity chief, Beginda Minda.

Adit, 58, claimed that he had submitted the application forms for PKR membership from 6,000 of his supporters tonight. The other 6,000 new applications were believed to be from former PRS members including Jimmy Donald (ex MP for Sri Aman) and non-party members.

In his speech, Adit, a four-term assemblyperson, told the crowd that the main reason for joining PKR was due to the “political castration” of the Dayaks under the BN state government.

He added that PKR was the best vehicle to address the plight of the Dayaks. Adit also declared that Anwar was the most suitable and acceptable leader to become prime minister.

“Enough is enough of BN. Now change is coming to Sarawak,” he said, adding that there are many BN members waiting to join PKR.

With Adit’s entry, PKR now has two seats in the Sarawak state assembly. The other is Dominique Ng representing Padungan.

Adit first won the Ngemeh seat on the now-defunct Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak ticket in 1991 but in the 2006 state elections, he stood as an independent. His entry is seen as a major boost for PKR which is gearing up for the next state polls, due in 30 months.

    Ready for state polls

The party is banking on the support from the Dayak communities who are increasingly disgruntled with the state government’s management of native customary rights land issues.

The dinner at the Sibu Trade and Exhibition Centre was organised by ‘Friends of PKR’ with Adit chairing the organising committee. The gathering is believed to be one of the largest political dinners ever held in Sibu.

Present at the gathering were Dominique Ng, national PKR leaders Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, Tian Chua and Sallehuddin Hashim, state DAP leaders Wong Ho Leng and Chiew Chin Sing. Other quest including Dato Sri Hajah Hafsah Harun (State PKR Advisor), Hj Wan Zainal Abidin Wan Senusi (State Deputy Chairman), former Deputy Education Minister Datu Hj Bujang Hj Ulis.

Earlier, Anwar was given a big welcome at Sibu airport upon his arrival at this central Sarawak town.

He was said to be visibly moved by the huge crowd who turned up to welcome him.

In his speech tonight, he described Adit as a “true people’s representative” and that he would help PKR bring change to Sarawak.

He urged everyone to work together to ensure Pakatan Rakyat take over Sarawak at the next state elections, which is due in two years’ time.

Anwar also said that a number of other elected representatives in Sarawak will follow Adit’s footsteps in joining the opposition front.

SARAWK IN HISTORY: YB GIBRIEL ADIT JOIN PKR SARAWAK

SARAWAK- A CHANGE IN THE MAKING, Sarawak Menuju Perubahan merupakan tema Makan Malam meraikan detik bersejarah untuk PKR Sarawak khasnya dan Pakatan Rakyat amnya.

Blow to Rimbunan Hijau: Logging in PNG ‘illegal’

Papua New Guinea’s highest court last week delivered a blow to Malaysian logging giant Rimbunan Hijau by overturning its rights to log the country’s vast Kamula Doso forests.

According to environment group PNG Eco-Forestry Forum, the PNG Supreme Court had on Oct 30 quashed the granting of logging rights to Rimbunan for the huge forest area in the country’s Western Province.

The NGO has been fighting through the courts over the past two years to overturn Rimbunan’s rights to log Kamula Doso.

Rimbunan conceded that their logging rights were awarded illegally just before the three-member Supreme Court bench was to begin hearing the case last Thursday.

Environmentalists lamented that Rimbunan had fought the case for two years when it knew its logging rights were illegal.

“For two years, Rimbunan has known that the concession was illegal but waited until minutes before the case was to be heard by the Supreme Court to admit their guilt,” said Sam Moko, Greenpeace Australia Pacific forests campaigner.

“In those two years, it has used the PNG legal system to intimidate the plaintiffs in the hope that the case would be dropped.”

Forum chairperson Kenn Mondiai described the decision as “a major victory for good governance”.

“This decision demonstrates to the whole world what has been going on for far too long, and legally reaffirms the Forum’s claim of widespread illegal logging in PNG facilitated by the government and the logging industry.”

    One of world’s richest individuals

Rimbunan Hijau was founded in 1976 by Sarawak timber tycoon cum media mogul Tiong Hiew King, an ex-senator for the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party.

He controls the Chinese Malaysian newspapers Sin Chew Daily and Guangming Daily, as well as The National in Papua New Guinea and Ming Pao in Hong Kong.

Tiong, who has an estimated net worth of about US$1.1 billion, is ranked 840th richest person in the world by Forbes magazine.

In PNG, Rimbunan operates half of the biggest logging projects and directly accounts for one-third of the country’s raw log exports.

Meanwhile, Forum executive director Thomas Paka praised the Supreme Court judges for showing that “the ordinary people of PNG can stand up to corruption and win”.

The 800,000-hectare Kamula Doso concession is considered the jewel in the crown of PNG’s remaining untouched tropical forests with logging companies vying to get the rights to log the area.

International environment group Greenpeace said 90 percent of all logging in PNG was illegal, mainly due to the lack of consent by traditional landowners and the failure of the PNG government to enforce its own forestry laws.

“All existing concessions must be reviewed and any that are found to be in breach of forestry laws should be revoked. There should also be an immediate investigation into the serious allegations of corruption between politicians and logging companies,” said Greenpeace’s Moko.

Rimbunan has been accused by locals and environmentalists of using violence, intimidation and bribery in pursuing its logging activities.

    NAJIB WILL BE A DICTATOR

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has predicted a dictatorial regime under Prime Minister-designate Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“If he comes into the picture, everything will be clamped down,” he said to reporters in Parliament when told that the Finance Minister plans to roll out the RM7 billion stimulus package which Najib announced in Dewan Rakyat last Tuesday.

“It has not been approved by Parliament. It has not even been tabled,” the Permatang Pauh MP said of the stimulus plan.

“The public is not even aware this is a problem as conveniently most mainstream newspapers have covered this up just to protect him.

“This is what we mean by arrogance of power, they control everything, dictate terms and monopolise the news and they can get away literally with murder,” he said.

“This means you can anticipate the type of administration under Najib,” Anwar said, referring to the transition plan whereby Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will hand over the reins to Najib after the March Umno polls.

Anwar’s statement also reflected the opposition’s insistence that Najib’s speech last Tuesday, in which the stimulus package was announced, cannot be considered an approved policy.

“In the issue of tabling this revised budget, the fact is that it was not done according to procedures.

“If he says it will be disbursed in January, how do you disburse funds that have not been approved by Parliament?

“So I do not know from where, maybe from his savings,” Anwar quipped.

Najib, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said earlier today that he expects the first projects under the stimulus package to “start to move on the ground” by the first quarter of 2009.

On Wednesday, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia had ruled that Najib’s proposals were not part of the Budget to be debated at the committee stage.

However, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah had insisted in Parliament that the monies allocated in the stimulus plan only required an administrative order from the ministry and were not considered an amendment to the Budget Bill.

“If you ask me what would I do in that position, last week after being told, I will just table it — what is the problem?” Anwar concluded.Malaysian Insider

ISU TANAH - RAKYAT SARAWAK MULA BANGKIT

PKR submits land memorandum to State Legislative Assembly, demikian tajuk berita yang diberikan Borneo Post hari ini.

Fenomena Obama, melanda seluruh jagat. Pemilihannya sebagai Presiden Amerika Syarikat ke-44 amat menakjubkan. Pemimpin dunia berlumba-lumba mengucapkan tahniah.

As you know, the chances that God gives to his subjects pass swiftly. They can be used for the perfection of humanity and to the benefit of nations or, God forbid, to the detriment of nations.

Beliau menambah:

The great civilization-building and justice-seeking nation of Iran would welcome major, fair and real changes, in policies and actions, especially in this region.

If steps are taken in the path of righteousness, toward the goal of carrying out the teachings of the holy prophets, it is hoped that almighty God will help and that the enormous damage done in the past will be somewhat diminished.

I ask the high God to grant all of humanity and all nations health and happiness, honor and prosperity, and to grant rulers and officials the ability to learn from the past and to use every chance to serve, to spread love and kindness, to eradicate oppression, to do justice and to follow the holy guidelines.

MONGOLIA GOVT WILL TAKE ALTANTUYA CASE TO INTERNATIONAL COURT

This statement was issued in the Mongolian press “MONTSAME” on Nov 7:

Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ The world community is well aware of the ruthless murder of Mongolian citizen ALTANTUYA Shaariibuu on October 19, 2006, in Punchak Alam, Malyasia, being shot twice and blown up by an explosive.
The Government of Mongolia reaffirms hereby that it has been consistently paying attention, from the very beginning of this cruel crime to the court proceedings. The Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs (previous name) of Mongolia have sent letters twice each to their Malaysian counterparts expressing their confidence that related Malaysian authority would bring a murderer to justice and deliberate a fair court conviction for the case.
The Government of Mongolia deeply regrets that the Malaysian high court judge made a decision on October 31, 2008, to acquit Abdul Razak Baginda–the murder suspect for killing Mongolian ALTANTUYA Shaariibuu.
Although Mongolia has no legal rights to take part in the court proceedings, the Government of Mongolia is responsible for protecting legitimate rights and interests of its citizen under international treaties and national legislation.
In connection with the recent court decision to acquit the suspect Abdul Razak Baginda, the Minister for Exterrnal Relations of Mongolia Mr. S.Batbold has sent another letter addressed to the Foreign Minister of Malaysia Mr. Rice Yatim requesting the latter to pay attention to and render support for ensuring conditions for a final court decision free from politics and other side influence.
The letter carries a statement by Mongolia’s Government testifying that it will have a strong reasoning for turning to the international court in order to defend rights and interests of its citizen if the court’s final decision results in unfair trial and proceedings.
A trial for the special unit officers charged for the murder is expected to take place shortly and the Mongolian Government keeps its eyes and ears wide open on the proceeding.

    RAMBUNGAN SEMAKIN TERHAKIS?

TAIB BLAMES DAYAK SHIFTING CULTIVATORS FOR CREATING NCR LAND!

Sarawak’s Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud must have forgotten there were some Dayak ministers, Dayak elected representatives, Dayak civil servants and Dayak farmers present at the Sarawak Agro Fest 2008 in Kuching when he condemned their forefathers for creating NCR land through shifting cultivation.

If he knew, he would not have embarrassed them the way he did when he opened the function last Saturday, 1 November 2008; unless, of course, he wanted to pass a message through them to their parents and their folks in longhouses and villages.

“You see, they (Dayaks) have two million acres under NCR lands just because of shifting cultivation. Apa itu?”, Taib said.

What is 2 million acres of NCR lands which benefits at least half a million and maybe more of the natives of Sarawak, especially the Dayaks, compared to 7 million hectares and more of timber concessions which benefit only a handful of people, namely Taib himself, his family and cronies?

No less than 5 million hectares of timber concessions in Sarawak are controlled by only 5 companies. Let us not even go into plantation lands.

Almost all of the Dayak listeners, especially the Ibans, were jolted by the words used by Taib to hit back at the shifting cultivators. YB Francis Harden, assistant land development minister, and other YB Dayaks sat uncomfortably. Alfred Jabu, a senior Dayak minister, appeared to enjoy the criticisms.

Yet none of them had the guts to speak out or walk off. If Sarawak Headhunter had been there, he would have shouted at Taib, "7 million hectares of timber concessions, apa itu?" Why should they be jolted when this is what they should expect, knowing Taib? Does anyone still want to deny that Taib is a bully?

Taib’s choice of words not only smacked of arrogance, but also seemed to confirm Beginda Minda’s accusation that Taib was a big bully.

    Confirmed, lah!

Since the amendment of the Land Code in 2000, the NCR lands have become thorny issues as the amendment not only declares all untitled lands including NCR lands as “State Lands” but criminalizes the land owners for defending their rights. Many have landed in jails.

According to the 2005 reports of Land and Survey Department, some 1.2 million hectares of land have been approved for oil palm plantations, the bulk of which is NCR lands. And by the year 2015, some 4 million hectares of land are to be planted with oil palm. Out of the total, about 1.5 million hectares are NCR land. By then there will be a few acres of NCR land left, if any!

Native land owners claim that their ancestral lands have been in existence for hundreds of years. Regarded as their life, now their lands have created nightmares for them and their children as they (the lands) are slipping away from their grips.

    WHO IS THE IDIOT,TUN?

Dato (Mindanao) Bujang Ulis today called me saying Tun Rahman was not telling the truth when implicating Stephen Yong over the Petrol Royalty.

He said Tun was scared to blame the real culprit, an idiot who was then the Minister of Primary Industries.

The political secretary of that greedy idiot at that time was a bright yob (but not very intelligent) by the name of Adenan Satem, sound familiar!

Tun Rahman told Bujang Ulis that this bright yob came to see him to sign a document agreeing that Sarawak rights over petrol be handed over to Federal government.

"He warned Adenan who earlier said Tun was stubborn and keras kepala. He told Adenan not to knock his head to the wall, because the wall is harder," Bujang Ulis recalled.

What make Bujang suspect that Tun is suffering from memory lapse is the old man inability to remember Ming Court episode.

"At the height of crisis, The (LATE) Sarawak Tribune was pro Tun Rahman, and Tun would write in a famous segment called Inside Story. One of the article was about that goon who was then the Primary Industry minister of Malaysia trying to make Sarawak petrol the rights of Malaysia federation. Tun objected this and meet Tun Razak expressing his disagreement(and settled for 5% royalty).

"Tun is afraid because they have just reconciled (Tun and Idiot) but it is unfair to blame Stephen Yong," Bujang Ulis said.

p/s Background - Bujang Ulis is a former PBB vice president and once a former deputy Primary Industry Minister and deputy Education Minister. His only recognition of Datoship is from Mindanao. Not from Federation of Malaysia or Sarawak government.

POLEMIK PKNS - PEGAWAI MELAYU SENDIRI ADA KEPENTINGAN.

In fact it was told that Tan Sri Khalid made the decision based on merit. When Tan Sri met with PKNS high ranking executives, only Madam Low was able to answer Tan Sri Khalid’s questions. The rest of the Malay senior executives can only smile and keep very quiet. Naturally they had a lot to hide and talking puts them in jeopardy. Not to mention, only Madam Low seems to not to have equities in PKNS’s subsidiaries.

NASIB KAKI TANGAN SEMENTARA KERAJAAN NEGERI DIABAIKAN.

''TERIMA KASIH DI ATAS KERJASAMA YANG DIBERIKAN SEPANJANG BERKHIDMAT DI JABATAN NEGERI SARAWAK"

Orang berbudi memang sepatutnya kita mengucapkan terima kasih.

Harga minyak sehingga kini 02.11.08 US dollar 67.81.

Lagi kerajaan menyusahkan rakyat.

Jelas, undi BN Barang Naik. Oleh keretaburuk

SWAK PKR SHOOTS DOWN SOI LEK'S 'RETURN' TO CABINET

Two Sarawak PKR leaders have scoffed at talks of Dr Chua Soi Lek’s return to the Federal Cabinet.dominique ngSarawak PKR chairman and Padungan state assemblyperson Dominique Ng came out strongly, albeit in sarcastic fashion, against certain members of the cabinet.

“In a cabinet filled with ‘suspicious characters’ of all shades, which allegedly include a high-class woman assaulter and corrupt-tainted people, surely a reformed corruptor of morals would not be out of place?

“Indeed, he [Dr Chua] is in fine company and I might say to be merely among his high-flying peers!,” said Ng.

Ng was among several people who spoke to Malaysiakini today on wide speculations that Chua could be brought back to the cabinet through the Senate.

mca agm 181008 chua soi lekChua, who beat MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan and two others in the recent party elections, was at the centre of the ‘Minister in the Sex Video’ scandal last year which forced him to resign his ministerial and party posts. Chua was also not re-nominated as a BN candidate in the March 8 general election.

After his surprise victory in the party polls, there were talks that the party may be recommending him to be a senator in order to return to the cabinet. By tradition, the deputy president of the MCA gets a ministerial post.

This has become a hot issue in the national press and DAP chairperson Karpal Singh was recently quoted in a national daily as saying that he has no wish to see a “porn star in the cabinet.”

penans meet suhakam 130208 see chee howSarawak PKR Stampin division chairperson See Chee How (right) asked whether Chua is really a changed man now.

“He was in the cabinet before and he has nothing to show, from his records, that he dares to stand up against Umno’s dominance in BN,” See pointed out.

With his fall before the general election and rise after the party election, Chua may have given all MCA members and others a glimpse of hope but will MCA risk its position to shake Umno’s dominance,” he asked.

See opined that Chua’s presence in the cabinet could put MCA in a more vulnerable position as he (Chua) would even be more reluctant to speak up against Umno’s dominance and wrongdoings because of his own skeleton in the cupboard.

See said Umno’s dominance is the root cause of the country’s racial polarisation, corruption and poor governance and mismanagement of the various arms of government.

According to him, the appointment of Chua as a senator and cabinet minister, if it happens, will allow the Umno-dominated BN to keep the forces in MCA in check more easily.

Why? Surely, you cannot expect someone with a dark cloud hanging over his head to speak his mind against Umno people who are or could be just as ‘colourful’ as him, See added in jest.

    ZAID IBRAHIM BUKAN LAGI SENATOR

Malaysiakini

BEGINDA URGED TAIB TO STEP DOWN

    Malaysiakini's report:beginda minda prs 011108 04

First, he called Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Umno ‘bullies’.
    MCPX

Now Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s (PRS) former publicity head of its Balleh division Beginda Minda has boldly called on PBB president Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down as Sarawak chief minister.

Revealing bundles of flawed strategies in the Taib administration on Mkini.tv’s 'Uncensored' talk show, Beginda also held long-serving Iban Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu equally responsible for the agony and sufferings of the Dayak community, adding that “Jabu should also seriously consider retirement as soon as possible".

"Taib’s era has passed. It is time for him to give way to the younger generation to take over the reins of power in Sarawak. Twenty seven years as chief minister is long enough,"

Beginda insisted that he was not launching a personal attack at these two Sarawak leaders but that he has decided to come out publicly to “say what has to be said” as he (Beginda) is also a member of a BN component party.

“My request is for Taib and Jabu to step down gracefully and retire as honourable and respected statesmen. Surely, it is better to go that way than to be forced out of office through people’s power,” he reasoned.

"Taib has been active in politics since the first days of independence in 1963 and has been chief minister of Sarawak since 1981. Alfred Jabu has been in active politics since 1974 and was made deputy chief minister shortly after.

"Admittedly, these two gentlemen have done much for Sarawak. There have been pluses, I grant that, but there are many negatives as well," he said.

Beginda touched on several issues close to the hearts of Sarawak Dayaks during the interview. He spoke at length on the land issue, uneven development in the state, lack of employment opportunities and the ‘sufferings’ of his Iban community.

“It is a fact that after 45 long years of independence, many areas in Sarawak are still not being developed, including my hometown of Kapit.

"Kapit is still the same as it has been during the colonial time of the British. During the time of Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke, we were rowing sampans as there were no roads to get out of Kapit.

“Today, there are still no roads linking Kapit to other towns and we still have to use boats ... only that this time, the boats have engines.

"I know that the two gentlemen (Taib and Jabu) will not be able to tolerate my public expression of these grouses. But the truth must be told. Enough is enough … my advice to them is not to wait until people demonstrate in the streets," he said.

Beginda also reiterated that PBB has an ‘apparent policy’ of undermining their coalition partners in "varying degrees of subtlety".

"The BN partners - Sarawak United People's Party (Supp), PRS or Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) - are in themselves complete organisations and their interests need to be respected. Interference by a senior partner, no matter the guise, is a form of bullying.

"Bullying goes against the grain of good and just participation in political affairs and dilutes the effectiveness of coalition partners when in fact they (the partners) should be effective and are seen as effective.

"Inevitably a coalition partner which is denied an effective delivery system will be held in ever diminishing esteem by the electorate," said Beginda.

Beginda was removed as publicity chief of the PRS Balleh division on Oct 27 following his ‘bully’ statement published in Malaysiakini two days earlier. He maintained he has no regrets over what he said.

taib mahmud alfred jabu pbb prs 011108Asked whether Taib could be behind the disbandment of Dayak-based parties, Beginda said: "It is very clear."

"One of the impacts of political interference has been to wreck the political cohesiveness of the Dayak people.

"Every decade, it seems that the Dayaks have to create a new party and as long as the party is young and new, it will be a junior partner. This is what PBB wants," said Beginda.

“If you look at the history of Snap, PBDS, SPDP and PRS, you will know what I am talking about,” he added.

Beginda also rebuked Sarawak's land policies which have not been reviewed since the 1960s although Taib has been in power for 27 years.

"There have been many disputes over land ownership and the exploitation of resources, such as timber, which have pitted timber companies against natives who have traditionally regarded tracts of land to be theirs," he lamented.

"In Sarawak million of acres of NCR land are affected and the economic opportunity for the Dayaks from their lands are lost. The natives need the ownership of their lands to be put in order through proper surveying," said Beginda.

He urged the state government to adhere to growing public dissatisfaction regarding land policy and ensure commitment to review current land policies.

"The uproar last month in Bekenu Sibuti, where the Kedayan people were under threat of an eviction order apparently made to make way for plantation development, need not have happened if a proper land policy that protects native lands and if a proper land adjudication had been put in place.

"This is no longer just an abuse of power but oppression of the people. If this goes on, the natives will lose everything," he said.
