KUCHING: Barisan Nasional is not impressed with the number of people who attended Parti Keadilan Rakyat's gathering on Friday night. Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said the crowd at the dinner gathering should not be seen as reflecting the actual strength of the opposition party.
"We are living in a democratic country and if the response (for the dinner) is good, we will leave it to the people to choose because it is too early to judge anything," Daud told reporters in response to a question that the dinner at Mile 4 Jalan Penrissen here had attracted more than 4,000 people.
Sebenarnya lebih 6000 yang hadir malam itu. Tiga khemah utama 40' X 80' tidak mampu menampung kebanjiran mereka yang ingin merasai suasana semangat reformasi dan gelombang kebangkitan rakyat Sarawak. Jika dibenarkan Stadium Sarawak digunakan saya amat yakin mampu dipenuhkan.
PKR de facto leader and Permatang Pauh MP Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was among other peninsula and state party leaders at the dinner.
Daud, who is Parti Pesaka Bumiputera vice-president, said that the number was small when compared to the crowd who welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at Kuching International Airport on Dec 14.
He said about 10, 000 people were at the airport to welcome Abdullah on his visit to officiate at Sarawak United People's Party's triennial delegates conference.
Pengalaman mereka yang pernah bersama-sama BN, ternyata jumlah 10 000 itu adalah buruh paksa yang diangkut menggunakan semua bentuk kenderaan. Mereka yang datang ini, dihadiahkan nasi bungkus, air botol/kotak, serta duit poket RM10 seorang. JIka nasib buruh paksa ini malang RM itu lesap oleh Pengerusi Cawangan yang menguruskan mereka datang itu.
Manakala setiap kali kami sambut kehadiran Anwar, mereka yang hadir adalah sukarelawan sejati yang menggunakan pengangkutan sendiri atau berkongsi mencari kenderaan yang lebih besar. Tidak pernah Keadilan menyediakan duit poket untuk yang hadir. Itu bezanya.
He however said the BN was not taking PKR lightly.
"We don't take PKR lightly, we in BN will work harder to help the people and see that BN will continue to be in power after the next election," he said.
Memang patut BN mulai gentar mendengar deruan gelombang kebangkitan rakyat.
He said the BN had a track record of helping the people, when compared to the 'rest' who have no record at all in the state.
Rekod kita berdasarkan 10 bulan pemerintahan di Selangor, Keadilan telah membuat pelbagai aktiviti berorientasikan rakyat. Slogan yang digunakan adalah MERAKYATKAN EKONOMI bukan mengenyangkan juak-juak BN yang sentiasa dahaga harta.
He believed that 'fair minded' Sarawakians would give their support to BN.
Daud also took a swipe at PKR Kuching division chief Dominique Ng who had earlier anticipated that Anwar would be denied entry into the state.
Jika isu ini tidak diketengahkan lebih awal oleh Suara Keadilan dan kerana PRK KT, sudah tentu arahan sekatan tersebut dilaksanakan.
On claims by former Sri Aman MP Jimmy Donald leading more than 20,000 people to join PKR, Daud, who is also Assistant Minister of Industrial Development said: "They can say hundreds of thousands of people, but at the end of the day the decision is made by the voters."
He said the actual figure would only be known during the election. Winning the election was more important than counting the figures.
Jimmy on Thursday had said that he was leading more than 20,000 people, the majority of whom Parti Rakyat Sarawak members aligned to Larry Sng's faction, to join PKR.
