    NOTICE OF QUESTIONS UNDER STANDING ORDER 19 OF DUN SARAWAK

    Below are the questions I will be raising at the forth coming sitting of Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak.

    1. FOR THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT

    Re Proposed Redelineation of PMC Areas to MBKS and DBKU

    a. The Ministry is requested to make public the details of re-delineation of the boundaries of DBKU, MBKS and Padawan Municipal Council, and to clarify if the exercise will result in rate changes, especially and including assessment rates in the areas concerned.

    b. In view of the objections of the Chairman of PMC, to its losing some RM5 million annually in assessment rates, what is the justification for the redelineation, and why is there no proper consultation with the PMC, and with the affected residents, before such and exercise is proposed.

    Re Closure of Courthouse and Barracks Roads

    In view of the serious decline in business suffered by nearby traders following the closure of Courthouse and Barracks Road, and in view of the Merdeka Plaza project having come to a standstill for almost half a year already, would the State Government not order the project contractor(s) to immediately remove barricades at Barracks Road, and thus restore the previous flow of traffic through Barracks Road and Court House Road to Gambier Street, for every day the roads are closed means that daily the shopkeepers are suffering losses!

    Re Proposal of Kuching City Listing As Heritage City under UNESCO

    a. Since the State Government has publicly announced its intention of applying for Kuching to be listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage City, what are its plans to ensure the preservation and rehabilitation of the Gambier Street historical sites (the sites referred to are the Vegetable and Fish Markets, Live Poultry Market, Old Information Office, Garment Building, Ban Hock Wharf Hawkers’ Centre, and the Lorna Doone Wharf);

    What are the criteria required for Kuching City and its plans to qualify for listing as a World Cultural Heritage City

    How big and what are the detailed information on the planned renovation of the area, inclusive of the tender process rules?

    Re Multi Lingual Road Signs

    Would the State Government not ensure that the multi-lingual tradition be upheld when naming roads, by including English and Chinese names on old and new road signs; introduce legislation to the same effect?

    Re Flood Mitigation For Kuching and Bau, and Lowlying Areas

    Following repeated and major flooding especially during certain festive seasons, what has the government done to accelerate the Flood Control and Flood Mitigation projects for the Bau and Kuching Districts?

    What are the total annual collection from the 10% levy on lotteries in Sarawak since its inception, and what are the use of the sums raised for the relief and alleviation of hardship faced by esp flood victims?

    Re Police Personal and Police Stations in Sarawak

    What are the infrastructure and workforce improvement to the Royal Malaysia Police in Sarawak in 2008 and for 2009 and future years, viz. no. of new recruits for Sarawak, no. having reported for duty, how many and where are the new police stations and pondoks to be built and being built.

    Re Retrenchment of Workers in Sarawak

    In view of recent worrying economic trends, what are the total no. of workers retrenched in Sarawak since June 2008 and what are the steps taken by the Government to reduce further job losses. What assistance is and would be given to retrenched staff to alleviate the severe hardship faced by them?

    2. FOR THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH

    Re Recent Outbreaks of Dengue Fever in Carpenter Street Areas and Sarawak

    With regards to the recent outbreaks of dengue fever in Sarawak and in Carpenter Street:-

    1. What and where are the new cases since June 2008;

    2. What are the public health measures which are being adopted to control the transmission of the illness by the A. aegypti mosquito; including more frequent and effective urban and sub-urban drain clearing by local council to reduce mosquito breeding to the minimal, in order to ensure Kuching remains a city for Healthy Living?

    3. FOR THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC ENTREPRISES

    Re Street Lightings and Safety

    What steps are being taken by the government with SESCO to ensure better traffic safety by promptly and properly installing street lighting, especially and including road junctions, at the relatively busy 10th to 15th Mile of the Kuching Serian Road and other areas in Kuching and Batu Kawa?

    4. FOR THE MINISTER OF CITY PLANNING AND TOURISM

    Re Preservation of Cultural and Historic Sites in Kuching, Santubong, Serian, and Sri Aman Areas

    What steps have the government taken:

    To restore the rock relief relics at Santubong, by building cultural display halls to highlight the Srivijaya and Majapahit influences?

    To restore Gua Sireh in Serian?

    To restore Fort Alice in Sri Aman, among other historic sites? By doing so, it would go a long way to assist in the quest for the World Cultural Heritage listing of the Kuching Greater Metropolitan area, and thus improving the tourism potential and world recognition of Kuching and Sarawak?
